1. Purpose To automate and simplify running AUTOSIG version 6.8a (and earlier versions) under Microsoft Windows version 3.x. 2. Contents The following files are included in ATOWIN.ZIP: ATO.PIF ATO.ICO ATOPASS1.PIF ATOPASS1.ICO ATOPASS2.PIF ATOPASS2.ICO 3. Description AUTOSIG is a DOS program that runs successfully under Microsoft Windows version 3.x. Such programs can often run without a Program Information File, but Windows' default settings are seldom optimal; they may reserve more RAM for the program than it really needs, for example, and some programs have special requirements that are not provided for in the default settings. So it is often desirable to run a DOS program using a PIF tailor-made for it. ATO.PIF is tailor-made for AUTOSIG. It contains settings that enable ATO to run not only in the foreground but also in the background while conducting an AUTO pass or transferring files to or from a forum library (in 386 Enhanced Mode only). ATO.ICO is a Windows icon that can be assigned to AUTOSIG using the "Properties" line on Windows's File menu. ATOPASS1.PIF enables you to start AUTOSIG with an immediate AUTO 1 pass. ATOPASS2.PIF does the same but with an immediate AUTO 2 pass. Associated icons are provided for those who want to add these PIFs to their Windows desktops. Each PIF has settings for Windows' Standard/Real mode and for 386 Enhanced mode. 4. Instructions Copy the six files listed above into your WINDOWS directory. Use Windows' PIF Editor to change settings as needed to suit your system and your preferences. For example, if you run Windows in Standard or Real mode and your modem is connected to the COM2 serial port instead of COM1, you will need to change the "Directly Modifies" section of each ATO PIF you use. If you have not added AUTOSIG to your Windows desktop already, do so now, following the procedures given in the manual for Windows or for any program you use in place of PROGMAN.EXE, such as Norton Desktop for Windows. (Where these instructions get specific, they refer to PROGMAN menus and boxes.) In the "Command Line" box, enter ATO.PIF--not AUTOSIG.EXE. If AUTOSIG is already on your Windows desktop, select it, invoke the "Properties" line of the File menu, and enter ATO.PIF in the "Command Line" box. Before trying to add the ATO icon, save the new Command Line setting by clickingon the "OK" button. Now click on the "Change Icon" button and type ATO.ICO in the "File Name" box. Save the new setting by clicking "OK" twice. If you want to add either or both of the AUTO-pass PIFs and icons, repeat this procedure with the remaining files.
