Tips on Modem Setup Many modems are shipped from the factory to force Carrier Detect (CD) and Data Terminal Ready (DTR) high (TRUE). Sometimes, this can confuse communications programs into thinking the modem is on-line at all times. One solution is to change your modem setup to follow the true state of CD and DTR. For most Hayes compatible modems the characters &C1&D2 should be included in the setup string unless you have changed the dip switch settings. &C1 (DCD) Data Carrier detect line from the modem to the computer functions normally so the computer is able to tell if the remote modem is still present, or if it has hung up. &D2 Modem pays strict attention to DTR and hangs up the phone when the computer drops DTR. The following commands MUST be either present in your init string to the modem, or stored in your modems default. Courier reads the result codes from your modem, and expects them in 'English.' Q0 Modem sends result codes upon completetion of commands. V1 Modem responds with words such as CONNECT, BUSY, NO ANSWER, etc.
