Well one man, Terry Spragg, has | | come up with the most reasonable solution we have heard yet, and if the | | world were wise, they would pay attention because it might be used in some | | other areas or times. How does he propose we help ourselves out of this | | situation? Check THIS! 3/4 of the world's fresh water exists in ice, and | | approximately 90% of all ice is in the Antarctica. It's been said that an | | estimated 300 + TRILLION gallons of water are yielded on the continent. | | The idea is to put this ice to some good use. The basic plan as we are to | | understand it would be to harvest antarctic icebergs and bring them to Los | | Angeles. Spragg has theorized three tug boats would maneuver a 10-mile | | long & « mile wide iceberg into the Humboldt Current that runs along the | | westernmost coast of South America. When they approached Ecuador, the tugs| | would then steer the iceberg into other currents that would eventually land| | the berg in Los Angeles. The journey would take about a year, and the ice-| | berg would have melted «-way...however, this would still leave us with | | 300 BILLION GALLONS of fresh water for use! Funding on the project is in | | the works, & it looks like we may finally have a solution to this dilemma. | `----------------------------------------------------------------------------' .----------------------------------------------------------------------------. | Earth BITS! | | * Page 8 * | |--------------------' `----------------| | | | We are a small planet with finite resources. We must learn to respect | | those resources and not abuse them. We have, since we have appointed | | ourselves rulers over all life on Earth, the responsibility to take care | | with those life forms and preserve their safety and perpetuation. It is | | in this manner we must proceed in order to make our planet safe for our- | | selves and future generations. | | | | It is through our efforts as a world of people to stop the continuous | | pollution of our Earth. We can do our part through the simple task of | | recycling paper and aluminum. We can also do our party by making certain | | our automobiles are kept in good working condition, getting regular oil | | changes and servicing. This helps cut down on the carbon dioxide burn | | off of the combustible engine. | | | | We are not independent people. Perhaps we are free people, in majority | | anyway, but we are still dependent upon one another. As are the other life | | forms of this planet dependent upon us. You needed a score card | | to keep up with the activities of the USSR this week. We will attempt | | to do a synopsis of the events of this past week. First, Nobel Peace | | prize winner, Mikhal Gorbachev is abducted by his own communist party. | | The reasons are multiple: first, to stop him from signing an open | | treaty, not only dealing with the elimination of arms from Eastern | | Europe, but numerous other things as well. Second, to effect a coup of | | the communist party, gaining more power and reducing the efforts of | | Gorbachev and Yeltsin, President of Russia, from enacting more democracy | | into the Soviet state of Russia. The coup was opposed by the people and | | Yeltsin and the demand of Gorbachev's release is made. Gorbachev is | | returned. Yeltsin asks Gorbachev to aid him in the transition period | | and calls for his congress to meet. Gorbachev and Yeltsin attend the | | the congressional meeting together. In this meeting, Yeltsin, dually | | elected President of Russia, disbands the communist party. Gorbachev | | becomes the president of nothing. Yet remains, because Yetlsin has asked| | him to do so, as a figure head. Yeltsin is not short-sighted. He under-| | stands that most countries throughout the world do not know him. Most | | nations have recognized only the government of the communist party for | | nearly seventy years. Yeltsin, as a result asks Gorbachev to remain with| `----------------------------------------------------------------------------' .----------------------------------------------------------------------------. | World BITS! | ...continued | * Page 12 * | |----------------------' `----------------| | him during this transition period. Russia declares itself a free | | and independent democracy. The work is far from over though. With the | | elimination of the Communist party many states under Russia now fight for| | their independence and freedom from the control of the communist party | | in their countries. | | Mikhal Gorbachev began the path of the new independent Russia when he | | first took office and power as President of the Communist Party. He | | could see the need of his country to change its direction in governmental| | powers and move towards a democracy. The economic woes of the Russian | | states and communist block countries clearly showed the need for a more | | capitalistic society. Gorbachev made efforts to direct his homeland | | towards this independence. He became very unpopular with the communist | | party as a result. His goal, speeded up by the attempted coup, was not | | as speedy as many may think, for it has been an on-going struggle for | | Gorbachev since taking office. The events of the week were stated best | | when a Russian veteran of World War II smiled at a reported asking ques- | | tions, pointed to the white, blue and red flag of Russia flying behind | | him. He pointed out the absence of the easily recognized red flag with | | hammer and sickle of the now defunct communist party. The first celebration| | of Labor Day took place in 1882 in New York City. The day was celebrated | | with picnics, parades and speeches. The promoter of this legal holiday | | was labor leader Peter J. McGuire. McGuire was a carpenter by trade and | | had gone to work at the age of eleven. By 1882 he was president of the | | United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. He proposed a holiday that | | would salute "the industrial spirit -- the great vital force of every | | nation." September 5, 1882 his suggestion came to life when 10,000 workers,| | many risking their jobs, left work to march from Union Square up Fifth | | Avenue to 42nd Street. The event drew national attention and by 1893 | | thirty states had made Labor Day an annual holiday. | |*It is common practice to wear black to symbolize mourning. But it has not | | always been the chosen color for mourning. In the Middle Ages white was | | the standard color to wear at funerals. White was suppose to reflect a | | hopeful attitude toward life after death. But in 1498, when King Charles | | the Eighth of France died, as the result of a blow on the head, his widow, | | Anne of Brittany, wore a black gown in honor of her husband. The royal | | example started a trend that remains with us today. | `----------------------------------------------------------------------------' .----------------------------------------------------------------------------. | WeIrD nEwS II !! | More of the UN-Believable! | * Page 19 * | |----------------------' `----------------| | After holding a SWAT team at bay for many hours, a 22 year old man who had | | been shooting a rifle out the window of his parent's home in Mississippi, | | walked calmly out of the house at 1 in the morning, set his gun down near | | the mailbox and announced that he was going to bed. He was then busted & | | subsequently ordered to undergo psychiatric testing. [ed: Wonder Why...!!] | | | | Canadian chemist, David Dolphin, theorized in a 1985 study that legends of | | vampires & werewolves were actually based on cases of victims of porphyrias| | - diseases which involve a malfunction in the biochemical production of | | heme - the red pigment of the blood. Such victims are extremely sensitive | | to the sun and can develop chemical imbalances that lead to the destruction| | of tissue. Dolphin suggested that some victims could develop fang like | | teeth as gums were destroyed & also might become very hairy. Since heme | | injections are used today to treat the disease, Dolphin postulated that | | victims in the Middle Ages may have turned to drinking large amounts of | | blood for its heme content. The march was sponsored by the Campaign for | | Nuclear Disarmament (CND). Gerald Holtom, an artist and CND mem- | | ber designed the symbol. The intent was to use the semaphore | | signals for N and D (which were arms held at 4, 8, 12 and 6 o'clock| | respectively) housed inside a circle, which represents the whole | | world. Holtom points out that the symbol has other meanings as | | well. By taking the circle away, you have a figure that looks like| | a stick man with arms outstretched. Well | | it is true. So why, some of you history buffs might be asking, were | | we taught that Lincoln and Douglas traveled back and forth across the | | state of Illinois speaking with the voting public when they had nothing | | to do with their election. Well, here is the reason. The state legisla- | | ture was up for re-election every two or four years. The candidates for | | Senate made themselves visible before the public and to catch the eye | | of the state legislator candidate of their party in an attempt to secure | | the nomination and vote for U.S. Senate. The candidate for U.S. Senate | | would promise the public voters that if a vote were cast for their choice | | in the state legislator then they could represent them in Washington D.C. | | So why did Lincoln travel so much? Why didn't he merely convince the | | the state legislator member to vote for him. It was because Lincoln was | | a member of a relatively new party called the Republicans. He was up | | against Stephen Douglas, a Democrat with national prominence. The Republi-| | cans asked Lincoln to make the numerous trips back and forth across the | | state because they knew they had a well abled spokesman to introduce the | | Republican party to the people. | `----------------------------------------------------------------------------' .----------------------------------------------------------------------------. | Metaphysical BITS! | By: Manfred THE OUIJA BOARD | * Page 25 * | |--------------------' `----------------| | There is a great myth that William Fuld "created" the ouija board. What | | Mr Fuld did, in fact, was to patent a tool that has been around for many | | more years than Parker Bro.s has been producing it. Nobody quite knows how | | William Fuld got the idea to patent and sell the ouija board, but there | | are varieties of the ouija which have been uncovered which are older than | | mr Fuld was, and some were even made out of stone and had lettering from | | other languages! In short, what it comes down to is the fact that the | | ouija has been around for at least hundreds of years. There is a rumor that| | Fuld was in India at some point in his early youth and came across someone | | who practiced metaphysics and used a ouija board, although no one is sure | | because the sects which originally used the device were very closed mouthed| | about it, understandable since there was (and still is in many countries) | | a punishment for associating with what they term devil worship. All we are | | able to say for certain is that it has been around for many moons, and it | | seems there is definitely something to it. Yours truly has used the ouija | | alone many times, and with others. I have seen the oracle move by itself, | | with no hands touching it. I am convinced that if one is in the presence | | of cooperative spirits, it can and is used as a communication tool. No one| | will ever be able to prove anything to the satisfaction of a skeptic, but | | as long as you KNOW you are in control, you will be. Unfortunately,| |the items were mixed up during the wrapping. The sister got the gloves and | |the sweetheart got the panties. Most people are aware that Thomas | | Edison invented the electric light and phonograph. But he also invented, | | wax paper, the mimeograph machine, carbon telephone transmitter, the | | radio vacuum tube, the motion-picture camera, an electric vote recorder, | | a storage battery, ore-crushing machine, an electric railway car, an | | electric railroad signal and much more. But at the bottom of the long | | list of inventions and patents is a device to communicate with the dead. | | There are always a great many stories that surround a person of exceptional| | talent and genius. Edison was no different. A perfect example is the | | story that Edison lost his hearing because a trainman slapped his ears in | | punishment when Edison exploded his lab on the train. Truth is, Edison | | lost part of his hearing as the result of scarlet fever when a child. But | | most have never read about Edison's study into the parapsychology world. | | In 1920, at the age of seventy three, Edison finally spoke out abut his | | studies into the world of psychic phenomenon and he revealed his secret | | of working on a device that would communicate with the dead. Edison was, | | obviously, a firm believer in life after death. Edison's comments regard- | | ing this matter was, "If our personality survives, then it is strictly | `----------------------------------------------------------------------------' .----------------------------------------------------------------------------. |Strrrrrrrange BITS | | * Page 29 * | |----------------------' `----------------| | logical and scientific to assume that it retains memory, intellect, and | | other faculties and knowledge that we acquire on this earth. Therefore, | | if personality exists after what we call death, it's reasonable to con- | | clude that those who leave this earth like to communicate with those they | | have left here." | | Edison's interest in clairvoyance and telepathy lead him to begin experie- | | mental testing. He, himself had experienced telepathy on numerous | | occasions and felt it held a great deal of validity. He set out to test | | people who claimed to be gifted in this area. Edison approached the test- | | ing in a purely scientific manner, not allowing his own feelings influ- | | ence his experiments. One subject, a professional clairvoyant, Edison | | tested had such amazing results that Edison wrote an account of his find- | | ings for a French research journal. | | It was through this interest Edison designed and patented a device for | | contacting the dead. Joseph Dunninger, a famous mentalist, corresponded | | with Edison about this device and his testing of clairvoyants. Dunninger | | claimed to have seen the device Edison had invented. But Dunninger did | | not confirm or deny the ability of the device. | | Nothing was ever found in Edison's records about the construction of this | | device. It is not known if that is because it was merely a story someone | `----------------------------------------------------------------------------' .----------------------------------------------------------------------------. |Strrrrrrrange BITS | | * Page 30 * | |----------------------' `----------------| | attributed to Edison or if he feared his reputation being ruined if the | | word became public knowledge. Edison, it is said, did communicate with | | people after his own death. Three associates of his, at the time of his | | death attribute their clocks stopping because of Edison. Edison died on | | Oct. 18, 1931, Sunday at 3:24 a.m. His 3 associates noted their clocks | | stopped at exactly the same time. In addition, they noted the grandfather | | clock in Edison's lab stopped 3 minutes later at 3:27 a.m. on the same day | | and never worked again. | | Edison, it is believed, communicated once again, only this time ten years | | later. The story goes that J. Gilbert Wright, a General Electric re- | | searcher and Harry C. Gardner, his associate, talked with Edison during | | a seance in New York in 1941. Reportedly Edison told them of the device | | he had worked on and instructed them to visit three people, one of which | | had the blueprint of the device. Wright and Gardener did so, finding the | | blueprint. They built the device and later stated they were successful in | | in communication with the dead. Alvin Speckler, scientist and descendant | | of Edison's, now works on the device. In an article dated 1989 he told | | reporters he had gained the blueprints and has been successful in the use | | of the device. He will publish his results in the near future. | | Material for article submitted by a bbs member wishing to be anonymous. | `----------------------------------------------------------------------------' .----------------------------------------------------------------------------. |* DISTRIBUTORS * [Eeeek BITS!
