PRODUCT : QUATTRO PRO NUMBER : 574 VERSION : 2.0 OS : PC DOS DATE : November 16, 1990 PAGE : 1/7 TITLE : INSTALLING QUATTRO PRO (V2.0) ON A 3COM NETWORK The information presented in this Technical Information sheet is designed to provide specific step-by-step installation procedures for installing Quattro Pro (v2.0) on a 3Com network. 1. Create all basic directories BEFORE installing. The necessary directories are: P:\ ÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ QPRO ÃÄÄÄ FONTS ÃÄÄÄ RESC ÃÄÄÄ DATA ÀÄÄÄ USER1 It is not essential that user directories be created at this time and they do not have to be located within the \QPRO directory. The \QPRO\USER1 directory is presented here only as an example since the structure outlined above will be referenced throughout this information sheet. 2. Run INSTALL. Your source will be drive A: or B: and your destination will be P:\QPRO (assuming the directory structure above). The install will continue as normal, copying files and prompting for disks. 3. Once all files have been installed, the message: ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³The QUATTRO PRO files have now been installed on³ ³your hard disk. In order to complete the ³ ³installation of QUATTRO PRO, please answer the ³ ³questions that follow as best you can. ³ ³ ³ ³ PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ You will be prompted for the following information: a. Monitor Type = It does not matter what type is chosen here because each user will specify this for their own system when they get into Quattro Pro. PRODUCT : QUATTRO PRO NUMBER : 574 VERSION : 2.0 OS : PC DOS DATE : November 16, 1990 PAGE : 2/7 TITLE : INSTALLING QUATTRO PRO (V2.0) ON A 3COM NETWORK If you are installing from a monochrome system, this prompt will not appear. b. Company Name = Press F2 and enter the company name. This cannot be left blank. If you do not want a company name, enter a space. c. Name = Press F2 and enter someone's name. In most cases, this should be the network administrator's name. d. Serial # = Press F2 and enter the serial number from Disk 1. If additional user counts need to be added, QPUPDATE can be run at a later time to add more counts. e. QPRO on Net? = Press F2 and select YES. f. QPRO.NET path = Press F2 and enter P:\QPRO (assuming the directory tree above). The Quattro Pro directory MUST be used at this time. Once installed on the network, the QPRO.NET file can be moved to a shared directory. g. Edit AUTOEXEC.BAT = Press F2 and select NO. h. User Interface = Press ENTER to select QUATTRO. Each user will define the UI they wish to use according to the .MP and .RF files located in their personal directory. i. Printer Make, Model, and Mode = Does not matter. If there is a common network printer, install for that one. j. Graph Quality = Press F2 and select Final. k. Character Set = Press F2 and select Standard European. l. Build Font = Does not matter. The fonts will be generated as needed once in the spreadsheet. If you wish to take the time to build some of the fonts at this time, press F2 and select the fonts to build. 4. Move to the \QPRO directory and enter Q. This will load Quattro Pro and create the QPRO.NET file. Exit Quattro Pro (Ctrl-X). 5. Copy *.RF to the \QPRO\RESC directory. The files being stored and created in this directory will be used for setting up users. PRODUCT : QUATTRO PRO NUMBER : 574 VERSION : 2.0 OS : PC DOS DATE : November 16, 1990 PAGE : 3/7 TITLE : INSTALLING QUATTRO PRO (V2.0) ON A 3COM NETWORK 6. Delete *.RF from the \QPRO directory. 7. Copy *.W??, *.CLP, and README.* to the \QPRO\DATA directory. These are all the sample and clip art files which come with Quattro Pro. Due to user rights, these files need to be in a common, shared directory. 8. Delete *.W??, *.CLP, and README.* from the \QPRO directory. 9. At this point, the menu preference files (.MP) must be created. This is done through the MPMAKE program. From within the \QPRO directory (assuming the directory tree outlined above), type: MPMAKE P:\QPRO\QUATTRO.MU P:\QPRO\RESC MPMAKE P:\QPRO\Q1.MU P:\QPRO\RESC MPMAKE P:\QPRO\123.MU P:\QPRO\RESC The result of the commands above will be QUATTRO.MP, Q1.MP, and 123.MP. These files will be stored in \QPRO\RESC. 10. Copy QPRO.NET from the \QPRO directory to \QPRO\FONTS. Like PARADOX.NET, the users need full rights to this file. Since they also need full rights to use and create fonts, the \FONTS directory is a perfect place for the QPRO.NET file. If the network also has Paradox installed, the QPRO.NET file can be stored in the same directory as PARADOX.NET. Delete QPRO.NET from the \QPRO directory. 11. Execute QPUPDATE. This will allow you to change the user name, add user counts, specify the type of network, and update the path to QPRO.NET. a. SOM file to update = Press any key to continue. b. Personal Signature = You can change the Network Administrator's name. The Company Name cannot be changed using QPUPDATE. Press F2 to continue. c. User Count = Add additional user counts by entering serial numbers. It is not important to do this at this time. Press F2 to continue. PRODUCT : QUATTRO PRO NUMBER : 574 VERSION : 2.0 OS : PC DOS DATE : November 16, 1990 PAGE : 4/7 TITLE : INSTALLING QUATTRO PRO (V2.0) ON A 3COM NETWORK d. Type of network = Enter a 2 for 3+ networks or a 3 for 3+Open networks. Press ENTER. e. Directory for control file = Enter P:\QPRO\FONTS and press ENTER. The directory entered here should coincide with the directory where the QPRO.NET file was copied to in step 11 above. Press F3 to save the changes and exit QPUPDATE. If you press F2, rather than F3, to complete the update, you will be prompted to backup the serial numbers. Respond NO to this question. It is not necessary to create the backup at this time. 12. If user directories have not been defined, do so now. The user subdirectories can be located on the network or on the user's local hard drive. In each user's subdirectory, copy the .MP (menu) file associated with the menu tree that user will use. Along with the .MP file, a .RF (resource) file needs to be copied to each user's subdirectory. See the table below for the appropriate set of .MP and .RF files: ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍËÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍËÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» º Menu Tree º .MP º .RF º ÌÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÎÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÎÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ͹ ºQuattro Pro³ QUATTRO.MP ³ RSC.RF º ÇÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄĶ ºQuattro ³ Q1.MP ³ RSC.RF º ÇÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄĶ º123 ³ 123.MP ³ 123.RF º ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÏÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÏÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ 13. Create a batch file for each user. This file can be stored on the user's local drive or within their user directory on the network. For example: SHARE P: CD \QPRO\USER1 SET TEMPPATH=%path% PATH=P:\QPRO;%temppath% CAPRTSC /T:15 Q PRODUCT : QUATTRO PRO NUMBER : 574 VERSION : 2.0 OS : PC DOS DATE : November 16, 1990 PAGE : 5/7 TITLE : INSTALLING QUATTRO PRO (V2.0) ON A 3COM NETWORK PATH=%temppath% SET TEMPPATH= C: The CAPRTSC command used on the fifth line of this example batch file is a program which comes with all 3Com network software packages. It allows a print timeout period to be defined. In this particular example, the network will sit idle for 15 seconds before sending an end-of-job flag to the printer, thus completing the print job. It may be necessary to increase this value depending upon the particular network configuration. 14. Define network rights. The following list of directories shows the suggested rights each user should have for each of the directories on the network: \QPRO (program files) -> READ, OPEN, SEARCH \USER# (user resource) -> All except PARENTAL \FONTS (shared fonts) -> All except PARENTAL and DELETE \DATA (shared data) -> All except PARENTAL NOTE: It is possible to also assign a READ-ONLY attribute to the files in the \QPRO directory for additional security. This will ensure the program files cannot be damaged by anyone without first removing this attribute. From the \QPRO directory, enter ATTRIB +R *.* The files in this directory will be marked as read-only. If QPUPDATE is used to add user counts or redirect the QPRO.NET file, the read-only attribute must be removed from the QPRO.SOM file. This file contains the user count information. USER DEFAULTS The first time each user accesses the program, they will set their own default options. The following options should be set by each user: PRODUCT : QUATTRO PRO NUMBER : 574 VERSION : 2.0 OS : PC DOS DATE : November 16, 1990 PAGE : 6/7 TITLE : INSTALLING QUATTRO PRO (V2.0) ON A 3COM NETWORK o This defines the user's default data directory. o This defines the user's display type. Quattro Pro will normally autodetect the screen type. However, by designating a specific screen type, load time can be increased. o This option defines a default color palette. In most cases, setting this option is not necessary unless you have a special display/monitor setup (eg. VGA/Monochrome). o <1st/2nd Printer> The user can define up to two unique printers to use and save them as defaults. o If the users will be accessing Paradox files from the network, this option must be defined. o This will save all the user defaults to their resource file. PRINTING If extraneous blank pages are encountered before or after printing to a network printer, use device Parallel-1 or Parallel-2. Do not use the logical device options LPT1 or LPT2. This device option is set through: <1st/2nd Printer> PRODUCT : QUATTRO PRO NUMBER : 574 VERSION : 2.0 OS : PC DOS DATE : November 16, 1990 PAGE : 7/7 TITLE : INSTALLING QUATTRO PRO (V2.0) ON A 3COM NETWORK The logical (LPT) print devices open as DOS file handles, while the Parallel drivers are written to as devices, without an open or close. Quattro Pro writes to the printer in batches for each graphics print job. First, it downloads the fonts. Then, it selects the page orientation. Finally, the image is sent. Each of these operations requires a DOS File Open & Close cycle if going to a logical device (eg. LPT1). For this reason, it is *REQUIRED* that Parallel-1 be used on the network; otherwise, the network may separate these operations as three different print jobs. The network must use a 'catch' timeout to separate whole jobs. It may need to be tuned. The Parallel-1 device is equivalent to LPT1 and Parallel-2 is equivalent to LPT2. If your network printers are installed using LPT3, LPT4, or LPT5, you must redefine these options for LPT1 or LPT2 and use Parallel-1 or Parallel-2 device options within Quattro Pro.
