There files are in an ascii format where you can easily read them with Unix elm or MsDos readmail. Each of the files is updated until it has 30 messages. The files currently span *=01,...,12 where the last (post12.zip) currently has 5 messages. (There also is a post00.zip which is an index file). As you also may know the Garbo MsDos archives specializes in some fields while SIMTEL20 is broader in scope. One of Garbo's and my own specializations is Turbo Pascal programming. Therefore I was interested to learn about a message on the news concerning Turbo Pascal version 7.0 release. I included the informational posting in post12.zip in case there are programmers on this list, and you are interested. This brings me to another subject. If you are an author of MsDos PD or shareware programs, please see the end of 14420 Oct 21 20:57 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/author11.zip on how to enter your own information on this list. Now I am not suggesting that you would call all the way to Finland from eg US (you are naturally welcome, though). The idea is rather to complement the Garbo and SIMTEL20 file lists to show you what can be available on BBSes. There is naturally much overlap, but for example neither Garbo nor SIMTEL20 carries recreational games. Wed 14-Oct-92: Acquired from a Finnish BBS: /pc/tsr char5.zip A TSR to paste special characters to applications. An extract from the documentation: "AscII-Chart is a very small memory resident utility that helps you paste Ascii characters (all of them: 0 to 255) directly into your application, at the cursor position, and "WITHOUT" the "three-digit" number that you have to enter from the key-pad with the ALT key. AscII-Chart can also be used to find and paste those extended characters with tildes, marks and symbols; or the characters needed to form a box, a rectangle, or even a circle -and AscII-Chart finds them very quickly." 12258 Aug 20 00:36 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/tsr/char5.zip Wed 14-Oct-92: Obtained from SIMTEL20: /pc/format formnu22.zip A simple shell for running the format command. This is an example of a somewhat unfinished product which might have potential. Among the problems I noticed are the following. The program does not check for the existence of the format.com. The program leaves the screen attributes changed which always is a bad practice. It asks the user about his PC's configuration while the more advanced programs do that by themselves usually directly from the BIOS. Hopefully the author will look into these aspects for the next releases. 82253 Sep 25 02:20 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/format/formnu22.zip Tue 13-Oct-92: Obtained from SIMTEL20: azmath1.zip Pre-calculus / calculus mathematics quizz. Computer based text and animation display of the basic statistics concepts like correlation. Very clearly done without unnecessary frills even if some nice animations are included. The package is really large. All 718Kb! If you teach statistics, take a look at the concept even if you would not adopt the program. Sun 11-Oct-92: Received from the author fmanage.zip A TP unit containing some basic file handling routines. A welcome addition to our TP collections. Sun 11-Oct-92: Obtained from SIMTEL20: /pc/filefind tfind215.zip ThunderFind "The Ultimate File Finder" (weak). An interesting utility in the sense how so many things can go wrong. The version is 2.13. The program is noisy. It leaves you in the last directory it scanned, not your original. Loses your cursor. Has a light nag. But it does find files forcing it way through you harddisk. Sat 10-Oct-92: As you might recall we had a huge backlog of uploads at Garbo which went unannounced in comp.binaries.ibm.pc.archives because of the disruption of the said newsgroup. I have forwarded most of my own backlogged announcements to SIMTEL20's and Garbo's common one-way emailing list, but there are so many in Harri's backlog that I have put them in a .zip file which you can download if you are interested. I will store the file for the duration of October and then delete it. (We do not usually store our old upload announcements, but this was an execptional situation). 20007 Oct 10 23:06 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/uploads.zip Sat 10-Oct-92: Obtained SHEZ archiver shell version 8.1. I updated the information in /pc/pd2/post09.zip about how to patch the hot-key for snipper, so that you can choose between versions 2.4 and 2.5. The new version 2.5 incorporates the possibility of putting a quote character in front of what is being captured (the familiar "> "). I retained the 2.4 version which does not have this addition as /pc/goldies/snippr24.zip since I am not convinced that everyone wants this added option. garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/screen/snippr25.zip Selective screen capture (good), patch: /pc/pd2/post09.zip Mon 5-Oct-92: Rhys Weatherley and I have updated our list of MsDos FTP sites and their moderators. It is available as 8978 Oct 5 21:17 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/moder16.zip Mon 5-Oct-92: Got from the maintainer /pc/doc-net faqc9210.zip Jean-loup Gailly's comp.compression FAQ In other words the Frequently Asked Questions for the UseNet comp.compresion newsgroup. Mon 5-Oct-92: Acquired from the SIMTEL20 program library /pc/linguistics vocab217.zip The Vocabulator, teaches words of nine languages. This program teaches words of nine foreign languages by displaying them in English and after a delay in the foreign language, or vice versa. (Well, for some English is a foreign language too, but never mind that :-). Vocabulator has options to skip, hide and add words, but it does not allow you to actually test and score your skills. The program is menulike, and nicely done in that respect. I have programmed a wordexam.exe (in /pc/ts/tsgmec11.zip) myself. It is not quite as fancy, but it gives you the possibility of test and score your knowledge. It is thus better geared to the Finnish teaching style of cramming vocabularies into the hapless students. The actual point here is however that sooner or later we have to seriously think of evaluating the computer aided teaching methods also in our university teaching. Are these just fancy extensions of computer games or does computer aided teaching have real potential. Or is computer aided teaching too impersonal and too mechanical. Can these programs keep up the students' attention span. To me these seem very serious problems in computer aided teaching. But at least one thing seems obvious to me. On the side of teaching the actual subject (here foreign vocabularies) these programs teach basic computer using skills as a side-effect bonus. 239471 Jul 7 17:46 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/linguistics/vocab217.zip Sun 4-Oct-92: Got from Bo Kullmar Jonas Hammarberg's /pc/arcers sqz1082e.zip SQUEEZE from Sweden. Compresses small. There seems to be no end of different compressing and archiver programs. But of course one need them all in order to be able to handle the relevant files if one is faced with them. Sat 3-Oct-92: Obtained from the author Samuel Ko /pc/filelist useful17.zip The Most Useful MSDOS Programs at Simtel and Garbo Sat 3-Oct-92: Obtained from SIMTEL20 /pc/education medtutor.zip Medical terminology tutorial and quizz. I found medtutor interesting even if I am not into medicine myself. There is much to learn from it about English in general, and that is useful to me personally. Besides this might interest my dear wife who is a dentist at a municipal heath center here at Vaasa. But if this really indicates the level that must be taught to native medical students, it does not give the most auspicious picture of the level of assumed knowledge of an average future doctor. Even I was able to score high, and I am not a doctor, not even a native English speaker. On the other hand, it won't hurt a medical student to get familiar with the menu-type approach of the tutor. An increasing amount of the medical reference knowledge will be stored in computer files. There is a good solution to this dilemma. Acquire an alternative user account, and use that address to receive the information from the various mailing lists. That is what I do at least and I have found it a very convenient arrangement. That way the influx of material does not interfere with my normal email. Besides, the joint SIMTEL20 & Garbo inforlits (msdos-ann) is in digest format to dampen the load. Sun 27-Sep-92: I am sick and tired about the constant bickering in the comp.binaries.ibm.pc newsgroups so that I will at least for the time being cut down on the volume and frequency of my support on the net. But if you are a regular Garbo user and need to know about the recent uploads to Garbo, please see /pc/_files.in /pc/pd2/news-pd2 /pc/ts/0news-ts /pc/pd2/infolist.txt The posted Garbo upload announcements will resume if a moderated newsgroup comp.archives.msdos.announce ever comes into existence. Mon 14-Sep-92: Rhys Weatherley and I decided to add cross-reference information of "Mirrors of Well-Known PC-Related Sites" to our list of MsDos FTP sites. The list already gave the information for each FTP whether it mirrors some other site, but this appendix shows it the other way round. It gives for each major site (Garbo, SIMTEL20, CICA, ulowell) the sites that mirror it. Rhys wrote the list, as usual, and I got the idea from a communication from the maintainer of the new Garbo mirror site NCTUCCCA.edu.tw. 8741 Sep 14 08:25 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/moder15.zip Thu 10-Sep-92: Downloaded from the binary postings ASTRO202.ZIP Athabasca University Micro-Planetarium. I also like the change the author has made in his system for entering the key of a registered user. Perhaps an example is in order for the befenit of the users. This is the key line I now have in my config.sys (this goes on one line, but I have wrapped here for readability). device=c:\sys\lastbyte.sys Physical=82C302 EXCLUDE=D000:64 NAME=FirstName_LastName KEY=mykey Of course the users will have to apply CHIPSET.EXE to find the proper parameter for "Physical" since it varies from system to system. Most users will probably not need the EXCLUDE which I have lest the Telnet on my PC and Lastbyte collide. Here is another example line from my config.sys DEVICE=c:\sys\highdrvr.sys c:\sys\vdisk.sys 7168 128 512 /e And a line from my autoexec.bat loading the CED command line editor high, and a couple of other example lines. c:\sys\hightsr c:\dos\ced -B384,128,512,128,128 -fc:\ced.cfg c:\sys\highmark c:\sys\hightsr c:\tools\buffit /B40000 c:\sys\highfile 20 None of the upper memory shareware managers I have seen are trivial to use, so much patience and time may be required when trying out them the first time. Lastbyte is not a difficult one, speaking in relative terms! Lastbyte is no longer crippleware. It is nagware with a 30 second delay for a non-registered user. This is another useful program from Patriquin. Most importantly, it can be used to seach through the text files of a disk for a up to five alternative texts. The interface screen has been rewritten for the better. Unfortunately the program has a very serious bug. If one specifies upper ascii (eg a with double dots, very common in Finnish) for the search the program crashes as soon as it encounters the upper ascii character. - The unregistered version includes a thirty day watch, the registered version naturally doesn't. Mon 3-Aug-92: Finally got around to publishing the delayed monthly download statistics for June. Available as /pc/filelist/dload06.lst and ts9206.lst. The July statistics is forthcoming. The file is 8315 Jul 10 22:45 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/moder13.zip. Wed 1-Jul-92: I have moved the 1-Jan-92 to 30-Jun-92 garbo.uwasa.fi news file /pc/pd2/news-pd2 to /pc/pd2/news92a.pd2. The news-pd2 file will thus contain news from 1-Jul-92 on. The reason for not waiting until the end of the year is the amount of material that has piled up during the first half of 1992.
